Samsung aimed to make the Galaxy S23 more practical by improving battery life, increasing base storage in expensive models, and enhancing the camera in the Ultra model. However, the Samsung Galaxy S24 might offer more than just the usual upgrades if Samsung’s Galaxy AI features prove to be valuable.

Still, having fancy new AI features isn’t the only thing that makes a smartphone worth suggesting. Fundamental aspects like battery life, screen quality, and camera performance are crucial for everyday use. However, with the growing role of generative AI in our daily apps and services, the importance of these features could shift over time.

Focus on AI Features

Samsung is thinking about how to make our phones better with AI, even though they haven’t talked about it as much as companies like Google, Meta, and Microsoft in 2023. They’ve come up with something called Bixby Text Call, which mixes text messages and phone calls when it’s not convenient to talk on the phone.

Now, Samsung is focusing on AI for the Samsung Galaxy S24 series, similar to how Google is doing it with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. They introduced Gauss, a new AI model that works with language, images, and code, and Galaxy AI, an “experience” that will probably be in the S24. We don’t know much about Gauss and Galaxy AI yet, but Gauss can do things like write emails and summarize documents, while Galaxy AI can translate phone calls.

People have said that Samsung’s phone software doesn’t have cool features like Google’s Pixel phones, which have things like Google Recorder for turning speech into text in real time. Generative AI, like what Samsung is working on, could help them catch up. But they have to be careful – these features should be helpful without being too much. Some of the new image editing features on the Pixel 8 raise questions about whether the pictures we see online are real or not.

Need for faster charging and more storage

The new Galaxy S23 phones have the same charging speeds as the older models. The regular S23 charges at 25 watts, and the Plus and Ultra versions charge at 45 watts.

However, some other phones are faster. For instance, the Lenovo ThinkPhone has 68-watt charging, which can go from empty to 92% in just 30 minutes.

In the United States, the OnePlus 11 has an 80W system and takes about 30 minutes to charge fully. In the United Kingdom, it has a 100W SuperVOOC system and charges completely in 25 minutes. OnePlus also has plans to bring 50W wireless charging to the OnePlus 12.

While the Galaxy S23’s charging speed isn’t the fastest, it’s still a practical improvement. This could make the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S24 more attractive to people who need a quick charge in just a few minutes.

With all the apps, photos, and videos we keep on our devices, it’s easy to run out of space. Most phones don’t have a slot for a memory card anymore, so we rely on the phone’s built-in storage and the cloud.

Samsung made the cheapest versions of the Galaxy S23 Plus and Ultra better by increasing their storage from 128GB to 256GB. However, the regular S23 still has only 128GB of space. It would be good if Samsung could also upgrade the base storage of Samsung Galaxy S24 to match the others. This would help the Galaxy S24 compete better with Google’s Pixel and OnePlus phones.

Samsung Galaxy S24 needs to support more years of Android updates

Samsung used to be the best at supporting the latest Android versions for their top-tier phones, but now Google has taken the lead. While Samsung promises four generations of Android updates, Google’s Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will receive software updates for seven years. This is a big deal because it means Pixel 8 owners will keep getting important updates until 2030.

Samsung needs to step up its game to match Google, especially considering the high prices of Samsung’s premium phones, which usually cost $1,000 or more. In comparison, most iPhones get support for six to eight years, which is more than what you find in most Android phones. Even older iPhones like the XR and XS from 2018 received the latest iOS 17 update, showing that they continue to receive updates five years after their launch.

In general, the best smartphone upgrade includes practical improvements like better battery life or faster charging, along with new features that genuinely set it apart from the previous model. For Samsung Galaxy S24, upgrades in storage and charging, along with creative AI-powered tools that are useful rather than just for show, make for an ideal smartphone experience.
